This is a very serious question that we have to ask ourselves; ARE WE FOLLOWING THE PATH-OF-LEAST-RESISTANCE in our understanding & walk with our Creator God?
In the simplest form in the theory of electricity, the positive charged particles seek out the PATH-OF-LEAST-RESISTANCE to reach the negative ground………….that’s the way God created it to work. We, however, were not created to work that way. The first case of this P-O-L-R THEOLOGY is found in the Garden of Eden;
Genesis 3:1-6 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die!” For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. (Emphasis added)
I’m sure if Adam & Eve were on the Dr. Phil show he would ask them; “how’s that workin for you guys”? Now we can look at this and laugh, but what was the theological outcome of that P-O-L-R………some pretty serious stuff that we are still dealing with today.
Let’s cross reference this P-O-L-R THEOLOGY into the New Testament;
Matthew 16:24-25 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
I want to concentrate only on the first “biblical command” given by Jesus here……”deny himself” (there is enough in these two verses to fill up a multitude of pages). If the “do not eat” command given by God to Adam & Eve was the primary target of the serpent (Satan), then it’s only natural that “deny himself” would be the next one for him to work his schemes (methods & thought processes in the Greek) on. This is biblically supported by the admonition given to Timothy by Paul in his prophetic look at the apostasy;
2 Timothy 3:1-5 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. (Emphasis added)
Let’s apply the same Dr. Phil moment; “how’s that workin for you church”? Because of the P-O-L-R THEOLOGY being practiced in the church today much has been forgotten (or completely ignored) of the “commands” given by Jesus to His “disciples”! We “go to church” to be built up in “ourselves” ……not to go out and do the work of the ministry(or, BE THE CHURCH) but to come back the next week to be built up in “ourselves”! Our so-called Christian bookstores are jamb packed with “self-help” books, videos, CD’s and magazines……usually the best sellers (thus pointing to the second thing on Paul’s list “lovers of money”). We go to conference after conference, seminar after seminar, workshop after workshop…….with 90% of them being on topical material on………..you guessed it…….self. We spend much of the rest of our time in the “lovers of pleasure” arena……and we completely ignore the explicit warning given by the Holy Spirit through Paul….”AVOID SUCH MEN AS THESE”. Hmmm, where have we seen this whole “ignoring” thing before…..oh yeah…..in the garden.
You can pretty much gauge how much of the PATH-OF-LEAST-RESISTANCE THEOLOGY has crept into your walk with God through first; understanding the commands given in scripture…and second, your obedience to those commands. Because of the indwelling Holy Spirit we have the ability to understand biblical commands…..after all…….He wrote those commands. Because of that same indwelling Holy Spirit we have the ability to obey those commands also……….but it is simply our choice…….just like Adam & Eve.
Adam & Eve were judged on this criteria and I truly believe that when we stand at the Bema seat we will be judged the same……………and I don’t think Jesus will be asking; HOW’S THAT WORKIN FOR YOU?
