Should current events really be classified as “weekly prophesy updates”? If we have a good understanding of what prophesy is, we will certainly be able to identify what it is not. In order to do this, we must stay within the confines of Scripture. After all, that’s where true prophesy and the truth of them are housed.
Oral teachings and traditions of ministers are to be tested by the written word (Act_17:11)(1) The only truth that we can know for certain is what Scripture says concerning a matter. The only truth that will transform your life is what Scripture says. The only truth that will bring peace and steadfastness to the believer, is what Scripture says. Concerning John Hallers weekly prophesy updates, it is difficult to sort and navigate through an hour and a half of teachings that are largely (90-95%) simply news clippings and current events with a sprinkle of Scripture used or even referenced and then, mishandled. So, there is not much for the hearers to test. However, one doesn’t have to as there no content of value to test, its easy to discard world news. Yet this lack of Scripture usage, in and of itself, tells us that the probability of prophesy being taught correctly is at best very doubtful. If there are little to no Scriptures being used, then how is it going to be effective and beneficial to feeding the flock? A rhetorical question: the answer is it cannot because the news clippings and current events are not spiritually imbued. Remember the Word of God is literally living and active and it alone brings life.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Yes, the Scripture happens in a real world. Yes, the Scripture is current and powerful.
In truth, the last real Biblical Current Event that was newsworthy was Israel reclaiming the Holy Lands and occupying Jerusalem. This can be biblically demonstrated.
In reading some recent comments by the followers of John Hallers “Weekly Prophesy Updates” it becomes apparent that some are struggling, confused, and literally asking for true Scriptural prophesies to be given and explained. There are some other articles here (1), that reference John Hallers lack of scriptural usage and his eisegeses of them.
Being a good Berean and not wanting to be deceived, let’s look at and test what John teaches. Here is the link to his prophesy update https://youtu.be/3PfMWJp3H54: he reads two verses and makes partial reference to Daniel 12. The video is 1 hour 22 minutes long, John spends less than five minutes in the Scriptures, which is all taken out of context and twisted to fit his current event narrative.
Take heed what you hear is always a warning in the Scriptures, for our protection and safety.
Gal 5:7 You were running the race nobly. Who has interfered in (hindered and stopped you from) your heeding and following the Truth?
Gal 5:8 This [evil] persuasion is not from Him Who called you [Who invited you to freedom in Christ].
Gal 5:9 A little leaven (a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers) leavens the whole lump [it perverts the whole conception of faith or misleads the whole church].
2 Peter 1:20 For you know this first, that no prophecy of Scripture springs from any private interpretation. 21 For prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were moved* by holy spirit.
With this in mind, lets continue to look to the Scripture for answers. John states here:
Two things to look at and test here are one: “So I think we’re at that time, it certainly seems it is.” And two: “Even Daniel said, I don’t understand what’s going on.”
John loosely references Daniel chapter 12 and he then deems it to be “the time” currently happening today. Looking at Daniel 12, John is partially referencing verses 3 & 8
Dan 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Dan 12:8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
Reading in context to see if what John says is so:
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. – Daniel 12:1-8
John says “So I think we’re at that time” referring to the wise will understand and instruct many. This is simply not true. In looking at verse12:3 we must look back a little further in Daniel 11:31-35 to get an understanding of the timing.
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. – Daniel 11:31-35
It is clear that we are NOT in that time, the abomination that makes desolate has not taken place and we are nowhere near this level of persecution. For John to state this is just ludicrous and shows either his ignorance of the Scripture and or a willingness to twist it to fit his weekly narrative of current events. Truth matters, and handling prophetic text loosely using generalized terms is just not acceptable. Biblically, all teachers of God’s people are responsible to bring clarity of the Scripture in edification, that both unity and growth are achieved. John Haller is irresponsible and clearly is not qualified to teach on prophecy as he doesn’t seem to know it himself.
Daniel is describing events centered around the Abomination of Desolation which occurs at the middle of the 70th week. The entire context of Daniel 12:1-3 is speaking of the Great Tribulation, the time of Great persecution, first of Israel and that of God’s elect Church climaxing with the Parousia of Christ to resurrect and gather His elect unto Himself. (Cf. Rev.6,7,12, Matt.24)
Secondly John says that “even Daniel didn’t understand” what’s going on. But that is not what the scripture says. So, what is it that Daniel didn’t understand? This is explained in verse 7 of Daniel 12.
Dan 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
Verse 8 continues, as Daniel says “And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
study notes: Daniel 12:8 Daniel “understood” the main features of the vision as to Antiochus (Dan_10:1, Dan_10:14), but not as to the times.
5:05 mark: “the reason I chose propagandized as the title today, is that I feel like I’m being propagandized. When I look at media and that type of thing. So, you have to understand that whatever you look at, a lot of times they’re half-truths. Now you can dig through articles and pick out little nuggets of facts …..but you just look at the headlines and not dig into them your not going to have an understanding of ….your only going to understand what they want you to understand.
This is somewhat related to what Jesus talked about and:
Matt. 24:4-5Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many and many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
I do think that we are seeing this increasing, that there is a lot of false narratives out there and they really come at you from a number of different directions. It’s not just people on the left but people also on the right that are pursuing a deceptive agenda. And it becomes very, very difficult to determine what the truth is.” End quote:
John takes eisegeses to a whole new level comparing world political leaders to the false Christ’s and false prophets.
In Johns rendition of Christ’s warning of not being deceived by false prophets and false Christs, the false prophets and Christs are of the world political and news media system. The Left and the Right, Democrats and Republicans are the ones we are to watch and discern to make sure we are not deceived and our faith in God is not shipwrecked.
Christ’s warnings are for and to believers within the church to help them identify those teaching false doctrines, not the world or its politics. John says, we must pick through the news media articles to find nuggets of truth. John’s narrative of Matt. 24: is in fact a false narrative of verses 4-5. He has twisted the Scripture in Daniel 12 and 11 by submitting only partial quotes to fit his opinions and beliefs and applies Matt. 24 to worldly systems and leaders, rather than the false leaders within the church.
Much of what John says is artificial and cloaked as spiritual truth. The emphasis is placed squarely on current events and news articles that he combs through weekly. This is not prophesy, prophesy comes from the Scriptures and is God breathed. These are events and actions of the world. Since when are we to “dig” into world news to find “nuggets” of facts or truth? And then how do we know its truth? How do we hold it to the light of scripture to fact check it specifically? How does world events feed us spiritually? We must look to the Scriptures to see what it says concerning the world and how, we as, believers are to view, understand and conduct our lives as believers.
Mr. Haller does fit the narrative of 1 John 4:5
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
(of the world — They derive their spirit and teaching from the world, “unregenerate human nature, ruled over and possessed by Satan, the prince of this world” [Alford].
speak they of the word — They draw the matter of their conversation from the life, opinions, and feelings of the world.) …and I would like to add current events and last weeks news articles. (esword)
2 Peter 2:18-20 warns us of what happens to people overtaken by false teachers and the pollutions of worldly teachings.
“For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.”
The emphasis upon false teachers here falls upon character that is sensual, arrogant, and indulgent. They sound good, but what they teach means nothing. There motives in ministry are purely fleshly, worldly, so they appeal to the spiritual needs of the people offering only carnal satisfactions. They use peoples need for spiritual nourishment to satiate their own fleshly gains. They love to have an audience, they love to talk, to be admired and applauded.
Fellowship Bible Chapel and John Haller both state that prophecy “happens in the real world.”
Here John Haller effectively flips the script comparing the “real world” i.e. news and current events to being equal to or even more important than what the Scripture says concerning end time prophecy. He diminishes the Scripture by reducing it to just a “structure of the end times” leaving the hearer looking to and relying on current events/news as spiritual food. He separates Scripture from the “real world” and implies the biblical end time prophecies are more of a reference for real world current events.
Of course Biblical prophecies happen in the real world; where else are they going to happen?, but unless one teaches Biblical prophecies from the Bible, using Scripture in context with correct exegesis it is of no spiritual value to anyone. These current events have no power to bring understanding to the hearer of Gods purpose or plan. To be fed a steady diet of current world politics and events on a weekly basis and present it as prophesy is like feeding the hearers hog slop then telling them it’s steak. It leaves the spiritual body weakened and malnourished and eventually diseased and deceived. Most of the hearers become ignorant and accustomed to the lack of spiritual food. Not to mention, that in addition the scripture that is used is taken out of context and eisegesis, to fit the narrative of worldly events and news rather than the Word of God.……….
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
Some followers of FBC and John’s updates speak out in the comment section: stating they no longer will be following or listening to the updates, as the narrative is effecting them in a spiritually negative way (note, this persons comments were then removed which shows John Hallers concern for the Body of Christ). Others are confused as to why it’s called a prophetic update because it’s all news and current events. Lastly one follower is asking for Scripture to be used and taught in context It seems to go over the heads of the moderator, FBC and John altogether. These comments have been typed in order, to be easily read, the screenshots of the comments will be placed at the endnotes. (3)
1. destiny coach: “So while this is called PROPHECY its really just CURRENT EVENTS, title is confusing.”
Fellowship Bible Chapel: “It’s related to how things will unfold. These prophecies happen in a real world.”
2. Keith Freeman: “I’m sorry but these have started getting (me) upset to the point of sin and hatred of certain people. I simply cannot handle these any more. I am unsubbing. I see no hope and only despair and wish that on those rioters that the police would give a 20 sec warning for dispersal of rioters then open fire with live bullets. Yes, massacre and then they be given immunity. Rioters being warned with a count down after the first couple of times people would stand down and disperse. I am thinking this is anger and building rage talking and that is not my normal disposition. So I am bailing out of this doom and gloom broadcast.”
Note: This is the beginning of the comment thread that has since been deleted, the rest of the thread is below in the screenshots.
3. ATrustedAuthority: “Current events that are either prophesied or related to what was prophesied. But it would be nice if some of the prophecies were identified. Mos t of his audience are familiar with them, but not everyone is going to know every prophecy.
Even when a prophecy is mentioned like Daniel 12 was mentioned, we may not know how it relates. You could read Daniel 12, and still not see the connections. This is not clear unless you study it out, unpack it, Most of us need some help.
Linda MacIntyer.: “@AtrustedAuthority I appont you to tell them which are which….Thank you for your assistance.”
ATrustedAuthority: “@Linda MacIntyre I wish I were knowledgeable enough to do that. Needing help with this was kinda the point.”
ValorinHisLight: “This is looking at current events through a biblical prophetic lens. For example, Jesus warned us in the Olive Discourse 4Xs more than other prophetic warnings to beware of deception, false messiahs, false teachers. Much of today’s narrative is propaganda, lies false mixed with truth and people are being deceived on steroids. Even from churches.”
Note: They are not only asking for scripture to be used and explained, but they also even go so far as to type it out in context. It’s sad when the sheep are crying out for Biblical truth and getting ignored.
destiny coach – So while this is called PROPHECY its really just CURRENT EVENTS . title is confusing.
Fellowship Bible Chapel – It’s related to how things will unfold. These prophecies happen in a real world.
A simple review of the extremely limited usage and reference to Scripture in these updates (two verses partially referenced and two verses read, less than five minutes total), along with the eisegesis of verses that are used; the conclusion is, it’s more likely than not that most of the FBC/Haller update followers don’t have a clear Scriptural understanding of prophecy and are being led into believing that news and current events are what is utmost important in not being deceived. And let me reiterate, I don’t believe John Haller understands Biblical Prophecy either. While it is encouraging and disturbing, at the same time, that some followers have stated as much and expressed the dire effects of that the lack of Scripture is having on them. It should sound an alarm to others and the leadership to take hold of the opportunity to teach the Scriptures, for it is only the Word of God that has an everlasting effect on us. We would encourage any who are or have followed FBC and the updates to take the time to view other Prophecy/end time sites. We suggest Alan Kurschner site and his new prophecy magazine. https://www.alankurschner.com/product/biblical-prophecy-magazine-subscription-u-s/ (4)
Let me end with this, if John wants to be a news hound, and people want to listen to weekly news updates, that’s fine. But leave the Word of God out of it and stop calling it prophecy updates. Everything that exist and is happening in the world is of the spirit of antichrist. We have escaped its pollutions through Christ and we have no business bring the world back into the Church. John, if you want to do something meaningful, teach the Word of God, present prophecy from a biblical perspective, give the biblical narrative of eschatology. Because your wasting everyone’s time with your self-indulgence. But, if you feel that strongly that you are right, I am willing to come to Columbus and debate you openly on this topic!
